Description
Update at October 19, 2024, 11:50 am
Happy Fall break, Tritons,
I am happy to share that our planned network outage is now complete.
Overnight, our amazing Information Technology Services (ITS) networking team successfully transitioned every building to the new and better “core network” equipment. This exciting upgrade will make it possible for us to continue transforming UMSL. I want to thank Steve Chapman, Steve Anthoney, Pollyana Appleton, Jin Lam, Shawn Murphy, and Mark Monroe for the numerous hours planning this upgrade that resulted in the successful implementation.
Sincerely,
David Gerstenecker
Chief Information Officer (CIO)
The UMSL Information Technology Services’ networking team will be replacing the campus’ main network core.
Our planned network outage is twelve hours from Friday, October 18, 11:59 PM (midnight) to Saturday, October 19, 11:59 AM (noon). Because of the nature of this project, many buildings on campus will experience a shorter actual outage.
Starting at midnight, there will be no network or internet access into or out of UMSL’s campus network or remote sites. As work progresses, we will bring services and buildings back online.
For people working and studying from off-campus (including by using mobile data services), many of our university IT services will still be available.
What services can you still access from off-campus during the outage?
· Email, Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams
· Google drives and storage
· Canvas and the apps found in Canvas
· PeopleSoft services like MyHR and MyView
· SharePoint in the cloud with a mailmissouri.sharepoint.com address
· The main www.umsl.edu website
· Mygateway.umsl.edu (with reduced functionality)
· Any cloud-based services your department uses
What services will be temporarily unavailable?
· Anything physically on UMSL’s campus wired or wireless network
· SharePoint sites that are housed in the UMSL datacenter with umsl.edu and umsystem.edu addresses
· Campus phone system
· Campus hosted web applications on https://apps.umsl.edu (e.g. Grad Portal, parking pass application, early feedback application, fee appeals app)
· Any academic or research servers housed on the UMSL campus
· Internet into or out of campus
· Campus wireless
· Remote access to campus systems or VPN
Some of the systems above will be down for just a few hours while others may be down all night. Critical infrastructure will be back online first, including the datacenter, servers, phone system, and student housing. Campus buildings and the wireless network will systematically come online as they are moved from the old core to the new core.
