 Campus wide internet outage – April 9, 2025

Description

Update: 4/10/25 11:25 AM

MOREnet informed us that our second route has been repaired. UMSL once again has fully redundant routes for campus internet connectivity.

 

Update: 3:48 PM

Internet service to UMSL has been restored. MOREnet has confirmed that repairs have been completed to one of our routes – fortunately, ahead of the original estimate.

MOREnet estimates the repair to our second route will occur tomorrow, 4/10/25. This will restore redundancy to our campus connectivity.

 

Update: 3:15 PM

www.umsl.edu and https://mygateway.umsl.edu/ are now accessible from off campus

Engineers continue to work on the route to campus

 

Update: 2:15 PM

MOREnet, our Internet provider for campus, has given an estimated time for restoration (ETR). They anticipate one of our two “routes” to be restored this evening between 6 pm and midnight. This will return Internet to UMSL.

We will continue to post updates here and email meaningful updates as we learn more from MOREnet through the afternoon and this evening.

If you are off-campus or using a mobile hotspot from your phone, many UMSL resources are available to you. We have provided some direct links below.

The North route fiber has been cut by vandalism.  The south route is still under investigation.   No estimated time of repair (ETR)

ORIGINAL OUTAGE: 10:45AM

We are experiencing an outage of MOREnet, our internet provider. The campus internet, in and out, is unavailable.  Phones are still functional.   MOREnet is working to address the issue.

 Network connectivity to UMSL data center

Description

Technicians have restored connectivity to UMSL-hosted IT services. Thanks for your patience.

Update – March 22, 2025, 1:00 pm

Technicians have been working to restore connectivity to hosted services. At this time, some SharePoint sites are still unavailable.

IT services hosted on the UMSL campus are currently unreachable on- and off-campus due to a networking outage affecting the data center.  Technicians are working to restore service.

 Network Access Control Upgrade – 1/12/2025 6 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Update 1/12/24 1:22pm

Networking Services has completed the software updates to the Network Access Control devices. Testing has been successful and WiFI, VPN and wired connections have been tested.

 

Information Technology Services is performing necessary updates to campus networking devices on Sunday morning. We are happy to share that no outage is necessary to make these updates. In our message last week, we indicated that these updates would create an outage, which is no longer the case.

Additional details:

ITS will be upgrading the software on our Network Access Control devices on Sunday, January 12. The initial phase will begin at 12:01 am on the redundant devices, with no noticeable impact to campus.

The second phase of the upgrade will begin at 6:00am and be complete by noon. During the second phase, we expect a short 10-to-15-minute window when people connecting to WiFi, VPN, and some wired connections, might be required to wait a few minutes to fully connect.

 UMSL Network Firewall Security Updates

Description

UMSL security administrators will be performing necessary security updates to our campus firewalls Friday evening between 5 and 7 PM.

Although, we do NOT expect any noticeable user impact from these updates, there is always the possibility that issues may arise.

Description

UPDATE: December 16, 2024 11:30 am

The device was replaced, and the network was restored.

UPDATE: December 16, 2024 7:45 am

We have identified the failed device and will replace it soon.

After gaining access to the building, we discovered that the network switch had failed. We are working on getting it replaced. At this moment, there is no estimated time of repair.
